Brown Pokorny began as executive director in June of 2008. Since that time, the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) has undergone two long-range, strategic planning processes. Brown Pokorny created a more stable financial base for the association, hired new legislative counsel to aggressively pursue veterinary medical issues, oversaw the rebranding of the WVMA and continues to be an informational source to policy makers, media, public and fellow colleagues. Most recently, under her guidance, the WVMA leadership has approved the creation of a foundation and the Food Armor&trade - HACCP for Proper Drug Use Program.
Prior to her position at WVMA, Brown Pokorny worked for the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW) as program manager. She was also the local markets specialist for Morgan & Myers, a public relations firm representing the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, and served as a Dairy and Livestock Instructor for the UW-Extension in Sheboygan County.
As a small animal practitioner for over 20 years, Dr. Odie Marcovici has worked in almost every conceivable practice type with experience in the private and non-profit sector as well as 5 different corporate groups. He has opened, managed and operated multiple hospitals including emergency, single, multi-doctor practices, a specialty hospital and an adoption center. His experiences also include relief work, a house-call practice and shelter work.
Nine years ago, he helped create and develop the Recruiting & Professional Relations Director role for VCA and since then has been recruiting every type of veterinary professional. He started as the recruiter for all VCA’s Northeast Region hospitals and in 2010 transferred to be responsible for all the hiring in VCA’s California hospitals. In addition, he has been the National Director for Specialty Recruiting and as of last year, the National Director of Intern Recruiting and Retention.
Having interviewed thousands of candidates at schools and at hospitals, he has tried to affect positive change in the profession one hire at a time. Dr. Marcovici is passionate about finding that perfect long-term hire and reducing the risk of hiring the wrong person. With close to a decade of recruiting, Dr. Odie has experienced the changes in the profession and can speak both retrospectively and prospectively about the future of recruiting. He coaches, trains and leads communication workshops across the US and Canada and speaks about improving the odds when hiring, employee engagement, managing millennials and creating a better hospital culture.
Eric Alexander, skier, climber and mountaineer, is achieving his goals while playing an instrumental role in helping others to achieve their own. On May 25, 2001, Eric defied the odds and scaled Mt. Everest guiding his blind friend Erik Weihenmayer to its lofty 29,035 ft summit.
Climbing has not always been without its trials. Alexander reminds us of our humanity and demonstrates the courage it takes to succeed in climbing to the "top of the world." Surviving a 150 ft fall in the Himalayas on Mt. Amadablam in 2000 was just the beginning. Alexander developed pulmonary edema and it became clear that he would need to be airlifted to safety. For eight months, he struggled with pneumonia and was unable to train for Everest. Gaining inspiration from his team and his faith, Eric dared to dream once again and fought back to play an instrumental role in the historic ascent. Today, Eric Alexander continues to climb and look for new challenges both personally and in the outdoors while challenging people to overcome the "Everests" in their own lives--redefining the limits of what we can achieve. highersummits.com/
